I trained my older hens to stay out of a certain part of my garden using a garden hose. They HATE getting wet. Bunch of princesses. A few shots with the hose and they avoid that garden like the plague. They aren't smart creatures, but they can learn.

DH has a plastic owl that the head revolves on, that works but you have to move it all the time or they get use to it & just walk right by. We enclosed our porch with lattice & added a gate.

A good dousing with the water hose seems to be working for us. That, plus the fact that we built a huge chicken run for our Black Jersey Giants! Bruce

The towel thing works best for me. I suppose I could fence & gate the porch... hmmmmmm... nah, towels.
No expense.
