I am so angry right now I could scream! I found one of my EE hens dead along our road. We have 14 acres on a country road that has a 25mph speed limit and we own land on both sides of the road. I found my hen in my Daylily bed right where I was working most of the day. There would have only been a small window of time when she would have been out there and I wouldn't have seen her that close to the road. I can't believe someone hit her and didn't even bother to stop and tell me! I am furious. We have several speeders on this road and they are always the same people. I'm so angry I don't know what to do??

So sorry to hear that. These days most people have no regard for any living thing! It's just sickening. You could make a sign that says please drive slowing, chickens at play.....

Aww! poor chicken! I want to let my birds in my front yard so badly, but then they wont be fenced in, and i'm afraid of them getting hit too! Sorry about your bird!

Sorry for your loss. Speeders are a particular bee in my bonnet. I live at the end of a dead end road and people come ripping up our road at breakneck speeds only to have to slam on their brakes and come to a screeching halt to avoid careening through the woods when the road suddenly ends. It's irritating. I've stopped people by standing in the middle of the road on their return trips to tell them to SLOW THE @#$! DOWN.

"We have several speeders on this road and they are always the same people. I'm so angry I don't know what to do??"

Since you know you have the speeders and they have little regard for your chickens if they've seen them out on the road, then I would say you need to keep the chickens away from the road if you want to keep them alive.

I hate to say this but chickens don't belong on the road. It would be a shame if a chicken on the road caused the loss of life of a motorist swerving to avoid them. I'd suggest that they need to be fenced from the road. Sorry for your loss though.

im sorry to hear and i can relate to your anger

im not sure about where ur from..
but in Aust... its not against the law to run over any animal on the road and not stop.
because heavy braking or swerving can cause fatalities and serious injuries to other humans including the driver.

so if someone rear-ends the car whom brake suddenly because a dog ran accorss the road is not a legimitate excuse and the person who brakes will cop the traffic ticket.
(but for a human...a kid or something is a totally different story)

like somone on here said, your chickens dont belong on the road whether it was ur choice or not.

where im from...if your dog ends up lost on the streets... if proven to be yours. you could be fined for not keeping your pet safe.
(not sure about cats though....since they seem to like to free range anywhere)

I still think that its ridiculous that even on 14 acres in the country, surrounded by farmers fields, that one cannot have free-range chickens. I ordered signs and one will be posted in each direction. I probably won't let them out of the pen as often or as long each day, but they are so much happier and much healthier when they roam free that I will still be letting them out. They about go stir crazy when I try to keep them penned up, even just for one day.

I live on a 25mph country road that gets about six cars a day. No one will be getting rear-ended. It was probably one of my "neighbors" that hit her and I just think its rude that they didn't bother to stop and tell me. I know its not the law to stop. It would just be a common courtesy since I'm sure I probably know the person.
