My preditor is speeding cars! First chicken hit by car on 25mph road!

Perhaps, the driver was unaware that they had even hit the chicken. I hit a dog years ago that ran right into the wheel of my car, basically hitting ME, not the other way around. I didn't even realize I'd hit the animal until I stepped out of my car to see what the screech and bump was. I was horrified to see my neighbor's dog crawling around under my car. The dog survived the incident with only minor injuries, but I almost kept driving not knowing I had hit an animal. Chickens are very light-boned and wouldn't make much of a thump, so I can't help but think maybe the driver was completely unaware that they had hit the chicken. I'd hate to think someone would knowingly strike an animal and then leave without explanation.

Oh, how aweful!

I hope you are right. Perhaps they didn't know they hit her. I hope that is the case.

I hate to have to pen them up. They've done such a good job this year keeping the ticks down. Our dogs and cats have no ticks at all and we used to be infested! They ate all the grubs. We have no Japanese beetles and they keep the snakes at bay too! They scratch in the horse poop so that it scatters and dries up keeping flies and parasite reinfestation under control as well. They do such a good job!

You don't have to fence your entire fourteen acres. Just fence a place for them to scratch. They make temporary chicen fencing which you can move every few months to give them fresh scratchin's. Chickens don't know you own fourteen acres. They just want a place to scratch for bugs.

The same thing happened to my little EE x BO pullet... I saw the simi that hit it... Simis arent even supposed to be on our road

We're putting up goat fence today. Perhaps that will help a little with keeping them in the pastures. I really like for them to scratch where the horses and goats are because it really helps keep parasites down and scatters and dries up the poop too. I am amazed at how well they take care of our tick problem too, I know I mentioned that before, but having free-range chickens has just done wonders for our bug problems!

couldve been a local person that ran it over.

but at the end of the day..... if you think about it...

Theres many.....many........many people in this world whom would hit an run a person...
(im sure you hear that on the news here and there)

if the world and its people come to that... then why would they bother to stop for a chicken?

just let it go....
Prevention is better than cure so for future reference, try to avoid this from happening.

many people on here actually "WATCH" and "SUPERVISE" thier chickens whom are let out of the coop. Why?...to prevent things like this and giving predators a "CHANCE"....

I watch my chickens too. That is why this was particularly upsetting. I was outside with them almost all day and was working in the garden along the road right where I found her. None of the chickens were anywhere near the road all day. I was in the house for just a little over an hour and she must have been hit during that very small window of time. I have been keeping them in the pen ever since and will be letting them out eventually, but not until my "slow chickens at play" signs arrive and are erected. For the most part, I'm over it finally.
