I have a Silkie pullet, unsure of age, but close to probably 11 months. She has been here since the first of February, and has not been around any new or outside birds. No other chicken in her coop is showing any symptoms of being ill. She has never laid an egg, but I just noticed the rooster beginning to mount her a few weeks ago.

I noticed that she had a messy butt and went to clean it, when I noticed it had a horrible smell. I of course figured vent fleet. So I isolated her, soaked her bottom, fed her yogurt, and gave her Epsom salt water by syringe. She seemed to be pooping better, so I just watched her for a few days. 2 days ago she began sounding and looking like she was working really hard to poo, and seemed like it hurt. I continued to soak her to try and keep the vent clean, and gave her more yogurt yesterday. Her poo changed to a lighter brown and was very watery.

This morning, she sounds like she is dying. Her breathing is so labored and she is wheezing very badly. She does NOT have any runny nose, watery eyes, and I have NOT noticed any sneezing or coughing. Again, she seems to be struggling to poo. I know I was VERY careful while stringing her water, and I do not believe she aspirated any. I spent 40 minutes for 1 1/2 tap, giving just a few drops and letting her swallow on her own.

Any ideas??? Maybe not vent fleet to begin with, or did I catch it too late and its went a whole other direction??

Thanks in advance!

With the bad smell and diarrhea she could have enteritis. Vent gleet can also have a bad smell, but shouldn't make her that sick. The wheezing doesn't sound good, because that could be a sign of her heart failing if she doesn't have a respiratory disease. Epsom salts is a very strong laxative. I would get her on an antibiotic such as Aureomycin, Gallimycin , Lincomycin, or Bacitracin in her water, and try to get fluids into her. Coccidiosis may have been an underlying illness. It would be good to give her probiotics also to help her gut bacteria. Here is some info on enteritis: http://www.thepoultrysite.com/diseaseinfo/101/necrotic-enteritis

Oh no! Ok Ty!! I have Oxytrycyclene here. Do u think that would help? All the feed stores here will not be open again until morning. I live in a VERY small town!!

I know that chlortetracycline can also be used to treat it, so I would think you could use the oxy, but I'm not a vet. It may not be the best drug, but maybe you could start with it, and get one of the others tomorrow.

So sad!! Woke up this morning and she was having to stretch her neck really high to get oxygen. I felt bad for letting her suffer, so I had to go ahead and put her down. She was NOT well. Bawled like a baby!!! But at least she isn't in anymore pain. :(
