So this is my 1st year with chickens and theyre only about 12.5 weeks old. I purchased all mine at a pet store and i started with 8 but wound up with 2 roos and one wasnt getting along with the others so unfortunately he had to find a new home so now i have 6 pullets and 1 roo. My question though is i have 1 pullet that i cant figure out the breed of but shes smaller and faster than all the others, and for the last couple of days shes been much more vocal than usual as well as more loving (jumping on our laps and wanting to be pet) but then last night randomly she ran across the yard and flew up into a tree and refused to come down to go into the coup at night until we let the others out again this morning and now my fiance says shes still acting unusual. Is this normal? Is something wrong with her? And if she does it again whats the best way to get her down? We have foxes, owls and other large fowl in the area so she cant just stay out. My 4yr old thinks shes about to lay her 1st egg but shes too young right? Including a pic of her, maybe somebody knows what breed she is maybe that will help?

Maybe a Delaware?

She just wants to roost in the trees because they are high off the ground, not weird at all!

Doesn't sound like a first egg, sounds more like she was frightened by something and doesn't feel safe coming down? I'd suggest using treats or food to try and get her down, or if worse comes to worse then getting a ladder. To try and keep her down maybe try keeping her in the coop with the others for a few days (and or also in the run or wherever they live) to try and set it as "home" in her head, also putting the feed and water in their home would hopefully help instill that? I vote that she's a Lakenvelder :) Grey legs + the colouring, does she have white earlobes?

I haven't looked at her earlobe. their food and water is in their coop. I'll try to bribe her with treats if she does it again, I'm not sure what may have frightened her though anything is possible, all of her behavior is off from what it used to be

So, don't panic over me saying this, but I've had chickens that refuse to go back to the coop, act out of character, and lash out all of a sudden because they new the others would kill them. I've had it happen twice now, both times resulting in the death of the hen. The spat that she got in with the others will usually blow over in one to two weeks, but during that time the things you can do to help are as follows.
  • Let the chickens out as early as possible, so as to avoid any unnecessary boredom or confrontations.
  • Check on them regularly to make sure there is no fighting or ganging up on her.
  • If there is fighting, separate her and one of the other more docile hens/whichever chicken she's most attached too. (except the roo) Keep her in an enclosure out of view of the other chickens for 5 days to a week, then move her back in view of the others for a 5 days to a week. After that period the spat should have cleared up.
  • Make sure there is nothing wrong with her health-wise.
Hope this helps!

It might be a Sussex chicken, also if she's doing that (flying on top of the tree) try grabbing a ladder take her down and try reassuring her with a couple of treats...
Hope the best for you.

Welcome to BYC @Sam92 !

Looks like some kind game bird mix.
How long have you had these birds?

How big is their coop and run, in feet by feet?
Pics, inside and out, would help too.

Where in this world are you located?
Climate is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, then it's always there!
