My puppies wont leave my ducks alone

well sadly the duck never got up. I've only ever been there for 2 deaths of my ducks and weirdly both times they hardly moved and just laid there breathing and then right before they die they open their mouth wide a few times start to slowly move their wings and feet a bit almost giving you hope they are waking up and then they relax and never move

he's passed away? I'm sorry.
In future if this happens again, treat it as a case of shock. Put the bird somewhere safe, dimly lit, warm, put some vitamins in the water and offer something- like scrambled egg, as food. And clean any wounds. I don't know if any of this wouldve made a difference to this boy, there could be injuries beneath the skin that we just can't see, or head trauma. But leaving them out, while they behave lethargic and inactive, is a big risk. If nothing else, a wild predator could have an easy snack. It's best to monitor them closely.

Yeah that last bit before we die we get agonal breathing. It’s the body’s last reflexes kicking in. I‘ve had rabbits do it and also scream and kick their feet right before death. It’s not nice :( but theyre basically gone at that point, just the last bit of the body left to go.

what did those rabbits die of? I've never seen that personally

I’ve had lots of bunnies. When something goes wrong/they get ill they tend to just stop eating, and its a race against the clock to stop them going into GI stasis.

One bunny had had a GA for a dental and later that night died. She started fitting/kicking and screaming. I couldn’t even hold her still. It was traumatic but over quick.

Another bunny had snuffles/respiratory infection and the vet neglected him a bit in the consult - he didnt even look in his mouth or ears or anything. Barely health checked him. Another vet at the practice said bring him back in (FOC) which I did, but those couple of days when he probably should have had medication meant it was too late. He passed soon after that. His last moment he was kicking and screaming. That didnt last long and then I think he was gasping/agonal breathing for about a minute after (I guess he was already gone at this point though).

A different bunny I had was only a few years old. He had his yearly vaccination and then the day after he stopped eating, had a stomach ache, and by the next morning went floppy. He must’ve had a bad reaction and gone into gut stasis. He died on my lap. It was awful. He was actually agonal breathing for over an hour on me. I just wanted it to stop after a while. But again, I guess they are already gone by that point, it’s just the last reflexes kicking in.

Anyway, hope that‘s not too doom and gloom, and more educational. It’s my experiences anyway. One bunny that was old and unwell I actually couldn’t face to have die in my lap like the others. My mother offered to cuddle him up in the living room with her until he passed.

But yeah, I’ve also seen animals seemingly get better, even though you know it’s not possible from how unwell they were, the day before or day of passing.

One bunny who was old and unfortunately got really cold and shocked from a sudden storm, couldn’t move much, was super unwell, and then a few hours later she ate some food, cleaned herself, and then suddenly came up to me, put her head up and looked right at me, and then began to pass away. The vet gave her some injections so maybe she felt a little better from that but who knows.

Also, hope my grammar isnt too shocking 😅 I’m not great at explaining things.

I can try and get some pictures later

I really don't think the dogs are meaning harm just they are soooo hyper I go out side and I cannot even walk because they are jumping all over me and these dogs are only 15-20 pounds each
Domestic dogs that don't need to kill fowl for food still kill them because ducks and chickens are just the coolest toys ever, making lots of noise and movement.

Start training these dogs right away! There are a lot of resources out there (and here) and I can tell you from not having trained my own dogs as well as I'd like, it's a lot of work. On a basic dog-level, you need to get them to understand the birds are not theirs, they're yours and off limits to the dogs because you are the leader of the pack.

Natural prey drive (e.g. an old dog without training who ignored birds) and training are separate issues.

Thats so sad! I'm sorry. Not to go into detail in this thread since its off topic- but I know how it feels to see them struggle like that. My past bun had multiple fit type things before she passed- it's horrible to see and feel helpless with. Condolences for all those bunnies.

Well another update. The other Pekin has been doing great although he doesn't ever leave the pool but maybe he likes it better I give him food in a spot he is able to eat from so he is doing fine. Today I finally made the new duck area dog proof but I noticed the Pekin looked like he was asleep while swimming or just super tired and he slowly swam straight till he hit the side of the pool yet he kept on kicking forward I picked him up and he didn't seem to mind which isn't normal at this point I was worried it was a repeat of the other duck but when I let him down he stood up. He looked sleepy but he stood there not even acting like I'm there. I hosed of the cement and while the other ducks ran away from the water he just stood there shaking off any water that landed on him. If I picked him up he would flap his wings to try and get away but he didn't act scared of me in anyway. When I moved the hose he even stepped over it as it was moving but he didn't move he stood perfectly still. I moved him to food in water in the new pen but he did the same thing he was about an inch out of reach from the dogs were he stood and the dogs were trying so hard to get him but he acted like they didn't exist. He would preen himself and do everything like a normal duck just he wouldn't walk infact his steps were unstable and slow. I am so mad I came on here to ask any advice and as I was waiting for the videos to upload I took a shower and I completely forgot about him and about an hour maybe after I left him I found him in the pound with his head under the water almost like he fell asleep with his head down and drowned. I am so sad because I felt like he should have been ok and he was ok for all but today
