Just wanted to share some of my wednesday evening events.
I went ahead and put a new roost all the way up as high as I could put it while my chickens were out in the yard. It's a 1x4 piece of pine wood sitting on 2 shelf brackets. It works great now, but as they grow, I'll probably have to sturdy it up.
I have lower roosts that are stair stepped so they can get up there, but the highest one is over 6ft off the floor. They all came inside, ate, got em a drink, then I heard the awfulest racket I've ever heard. I opened the door, and all 9 of them were up there, squabbling over who sits where. They all want to be by the window to look out.
They have already established a pecking order. Of the 9 birds, I have an Australorp, a RIR, and my lone Buff O that all 3 seem to "rule the roost".
