My Roo broke off his own spurs

The other day I noticed that my roo had broke off one of his spurs. He is a big, New Hamshire and had big long spurs about three and a half inches long. Then the next day the other one was broke off. There was some blood but he seems fine.
I have never had this happen before. I guess he just got tired of walking around bow legged all day.
Has this happend to any one else??

I've read on here that people remove part of the spurs themselves without causing too much discomfort to the rooster.
