I introduced a roo in with my hens recently. He is a younger roo. I was hoping for an older one but this one looks awesome. He was the second best looking one. The best looking one he wouldn't get rid of. I took my pick from 4 white leghorn roos my uncle had. His legs aren't that thick yet and his spurs are only about 1/2 inch to maybe 3/4 inch. He has more growing to do. He is awesome looking. He has a giant comb.

Right now he is afraid of my hens. If he gets to close to my hens they will peck and fight with him. He just try's to get away. He wants nothing to do with them. When they free range he does stays close but the hens try to dominate him. He is a wimp.

When will he realize he is a roo and dominate them and take control of his flock?

Im sure once he realizes he's a rooster, the Im in charge attitude will take over. Mine did that first couple days, then he started jumping on the hens. They changed thier attitude toward him in no time!!

Ham, the problem is his immaturity. The girls are resident and that is their territory. Chickens are extremely territorial and this guy is not only a stranger, but he is younger than them and immature. Had you obtained a mature cock, the scenario would have been completely different. There is hope, however and in time he will gain the maturity needed and dominate the girls. This will take some time and since they can run a good bluff, it will take a little longer than if he had been raised with them. I`ve seen it many times and he will take his rightfull place as he matures. This is normal, don`t blame the boy.......Pop

I introduced two flocks together last year, one with a young Cuckoo Marans cockerel to another group of year old hens. My boy didn't want a thing to do with the older ladies for the first couple of months, if he got close they'd knock him on the head. As he matured though and started filling out he started to assert his dominance more. Now he's almost a year old and is probably the best rooster in the world! He's very sweet to his hens and is gentle as can be around people. I feel like because he was introduced as the "underdog" he respects his women much more.

He wasn't always the big man on campus, he had to prove himself first. L0L.

Your roo will come into his own, give him time.
