Yes, they almost always (marans and Wellies) fade. The darkest eggs are in the first few weeks, then they get lighter. They are darker again at the start of a season, but lighter than they were at the start of the last. It’s all about their reserves and production of pigments.
That may have seemed like a stupid question as I knew this, but I think there was confusion on my part to a conversation we had early on where you asked about mine starting out a little lighter and then getting darker...where yours start dark. There's where I was curious if yours were lightening up as the ink runs out also or if they stayed consistent.
I feel like her bloom has increased with time, but this is in line with the colour of her eggs towards the end of last season, so it’s still part of the trend.
I feel like there’s always going to be a limit where retaining dark eggs just means the hen lays fewer eggs overall. I’d rather have a higher egg count to keep up customers’ orders than have 7s and 8s all year round, but that’s just me. An egg shower would definitely benefit.
Kind of funny but I really don't get too many chances to see egg color fade.
Never had a broody marans. Somehow have one of my Wellies that like to go broody, even though that’s almost unheard of. And currently 2/3 paint silkies have gone broody again, even though they just hatched out the marans. Reggie is broody and laying at the same time. My Brahmas go broody, I have one white rock that goes broody too often. But never had anything else go broody.
