I have a 5 1/2 month silkie roo. He use to follow me around and he liked to be picked up. He was real good with my other silkie hens too. After getting a new hen that was 8 months old a month ago he has changed. He makes growly noises at me and grabs sticks in his mouth and throws them on the ground. He also crab walks around the hens and pecks them. I am in australia and it is near winter so poach wont let scramble mate with her now. I think maybe he is angry about it. Do roosters normally behave like this. Will he go back to the nice laid back roo he once was when my poach lets him mate again. He doesnt draw blood but he pecks them for no reason. My other 2 hens are 5 1/2 months old too and they havent even laid an egg yet, so no mating there either. I still pick him up though and I dont care if he tries to throw sticks at me. When he walks towards me he also high steps so I do it back. Is he normal

He's normal! He is getting his male hormones in high gear now that he is coming of age and also has females to consort with. Your 5 1/2 mo. old gals just may not have sexually matured enough to start producing....they don't need to be bred to do this. No rooster required!

Just give them a little time.... if you find that he is mating them too much later on and wearing the feathers off their backs, it may be time to separate him from the hens. If a roo is too aggressive and active, it could affect their egg laying performance.
