My rooster has started to attack.

I have to agree with Cynthia....so far...I only have ONE mean roo...and heis the polish. He and I are coming to an understanding tho...he HATES to be held.....so, if he doesnt jump, I dont pick him up! I dont want to have to watch my back, when I am out there. So, if I cant calm them down...they are gone! Dont want to breed a mean roo anyways!

I just rehomed my naughty silky bantam roo, its so nice and quiet, the girls are happy and I can walk around in the coop without having to watch my back.
Even though he was little he could still hurt my legs with his 1/2 inch spurs.

 

[Standard Hen]

I talked with a local farmer last night who has had amongst chickens everything under the sun at her place. She told me once they do it they always will. I proceeded to tell her of your answer rooster-red and the link provided by Dawn and she said that is all well and fine IF you have the time to put into it. I am going back to work tomorrow after being out on a medical all summer. Time is something now I will have none of!
This morning when I went back to feed and turn everyone out as I was coming up from the barn he was watching me and started towards me, I grabbed a pitchfork and walked up and and he followed but did not attack. All my animals get along, I have two small dogs and cats and I can just see if he starts attacking them then everyone might want to attack the chickens which I certainly do not want. This is the first full sized rooster I have had so I was open to opinions from everyone here on the board. Cynthia, I WANT A BIG BLUE BABY!!! I know they are out there and would like to do my own chicks in the spring. Again thanks everyone for your valuable input.

Hmmm that is a tough one regarding the other pets. My roo only attacked me and my son and partner but he didnt attack my burmese cat or my 2 bunnies.
He never attacked if I had anything in my hand.

With my leghorn roo that is headed to the pot, I had taught him that I was boss and he left me and my kids alone but went after the girls. Although from what I have heard of leghorns his aggressiveness isn't unusual. Not something I would choose (these fell into our laps). I hope whatever you decide you have good luck!

Dawn, thank you for the link to the Keeping roosters saine page! Wow, how informative! I book marked it also. Surprisingly,,I've already been doing those things to my roo's. I swat at them when they bite the other chickens on the butt but I also hold them in the evenings and pet them. So far only one roo has tried to peck at my feet. He is the leader of the flock and he is a big beautiful silkie roo. I have bantams and standards. They all roam together for the most part but the standards keep away from the bantams during the day because the bantams are the oldest. Only being a few months older, the pack order and pecking order is already established. I'm amazed at when I see my tiny little bantam cochin hen bite a big standard on the back of the neck to keep it off the food and the standard runs and hollars. When the standards get bit,,they give out a hollar which I sware sounds like "OUUUUCH"! They all sleep together at night but during the day they seperate in my yard. When I'm present and see one bite the other I always make them stop, I even chase them away even if it's one of my roos. I have a couple of aggressive bantam roos towards the standard hens. I love all my birds dearly and I wish they wouldn't peck at each other like that. Especially when they bite the smaller birds. I have one tiny little white silkie who usually doesn't ever get pecked at but it happens on occasion and it infuriates me! That's when I go after the rooster relentlessly! My silkies stick together at all times looking out for one another. They are soo soo precious. Another favorite is my Buff Orp. She is the nosey chicken off all. Always in my space and I always trip over her. She is also my biggest bird, looks to be on steroids. She has a very sweet spirit and non-skittishness about her. My RIR is skittish. But the Lakenvelders are the worse with skittishness. They are 2 hens and I call them the twins. They walk side by side never leaving the other. They run side by side too. I have 4 standard cochin hens and one bantam cochin hen. One wyndotte , columbian. And 4 brahmas, standard. I also have 3 silkie hens and 3 silkie roos. I have one more silkie who I think is turning out to be a boy,,,darn it. Oh I also have one agressive white frizzle bantam who mean to allll the hens. I think about taking him out all the time! He chases my birds all over the yard with his little squatty self. If he wern't so darn beautiful I would gotten rid of him but I just love his looks. He mounted the bantam cochin hen today,,,does that mean she is fertille? So far I have NO eggs and they are all about 6 months old. I wait daily for an egg.

We only have/had one rooster. He is quite aggressive to a couple of my friends, but to young kids he is great. They are the ones that bring special treats, apples, cantaloupe, loads of fall leaves to scratch through. We threatened to get rid of him but after a fox got into the coop and left badly damaged and without dinner we promised to tolerate him. He never comes near me if I have a big rake with me if I am in the coop. When he was younger it pinned him to the ground for quite a long period of time! Oh, and a neighbor trims his nails and spurs for us. He has not come at us feet first since the first trim and he was nicer to the girls.

So fo rme an agressive rooster is worth the patience if you live in an area with many preditors.
