my rooster is hurting them

well he is grabbing the back of the comb instead of the neck or the head. he ripped one of my white leghorns up pretty bad one time and he did it again to a california white and tore a chunk out of her comb. i cleaned it and wrapped it up she seems fine now but i dont know what to do if he cant mate right what should i do? i want a rooster in the flock so they can hatch biddies out from time to time but i dont want my girls to be hurt by him.

How old is he? He may just be learning to mate with them. And since leghorns tend to have such big combs, that may have been the easiest thing for him to hold on to whether he meant to hurt them or not.

he is the same age as them which is 26 weeks and 2 days old and has been mating since 21 or 22 weeks i do believe thats the first time i saw him mate
