Hello my rooster has started mating his 10 hens regularly. We got them all at the end of March as week old chicks. I'm curious now that he is mating regularly, will the hens start laying? We've had a few stray eggs laid but id say less then 3. The rooster is a barred rock as well as 2 hens, 4 copper marans, one australorp, 2 buff Orpingtons and a light yellow hen I'm not sure her breed. Any suggestions? They are in layer crumbles and get regular veggies, scraps, scratch, and snacks ie mealy worms and they always have water. There is 3 indoor nest boxes and 2 outside boxes under roofing and raised. They all have a ceramic egg in them too. They have a 15x15 free range run with a 2 story coop (they like outside unless it's raining) they also have a covered part of the run if they wanna stay outside (we live in new orleans so it gets hot) Any ideas lemme know! Thank you

Lol thank you! Yep he's doing his lil rooster dance, mounting, then he'll hop off & fluff up like "thanks for the 6 seconds lol"

Your birds are young yet, though first eggs could come any time. My pullets (any female bird who is less than a year old is called a pullet) were hatched 4/10, and started laying at 18 weeks. Egg count for them continues to go up as more and more of the heritage breeds come into lay. The cockerel (male chicken less than a year old) breeding the pullets most likely has nothing to do with the fact that they may be laying soon. Usually, a cockerel will breed anything he can catch, with little regard to the object of his affections being a willing participant.
