I made excuses for our rooster too. I really liked him. He was beautiful, and I loved his cock-a-doodle-doo, and I saw him fight a hawk off and save my favorite hen once. We got three batches of lovely chicks this year. So when he would make a move at me I'd laugh it off and shoo him away. I never backed down from him and I tried being the boss, tried being nice, even tried hanging him upside down by his feet until he gave up fighting, tried pressing him down to the ground like he was being mated - nothing worked. He just plain turned MEAN at about a year and a half and got really aggressive. He got in a lucky shot on my husband and cost us a $200 visit to the urgent care clinic.

In the end, like a poster above said, he did indeed taste like chicken.

There are soooooo many good roosters. I wouldn't tolerate a mean one or a bad one. They are easy to come by. If ya get a bad one, get rid of him (one way or another). It is so much fun to have nice roosters, a real joy to observe. I am not gonna spend my time running from a roo, or trying to teach him manners. Good ones stay, bad ones don't!

Roos' go after people or whatever to let them know he is protecting his girls. It's just what they do.

It is what some of them do....this does not mean he must continue to do this and it can be stopped. The occasional roo tries this with me.....ONCE! He is then schooled in the knowledge that I am top roo on the place and he need never try it again. I've never had one do the dance or the rush twice. And I don't have to look over my shoulder every day, either. One just has to be smarter than a roo.....

I, too, get a little puzzled at the new rooster threads each day as we have a wonderful search option about the millions of other rooster threads and what those people have done about it....

No, one does not have to live in fear of a rooster every day because he is doing what is "instinctual". Been doing this for nigh on 33 years now and have never been flogged. Been rushed, even lightly pecked, been danced at....never been flogged.

I don't have to carry a stick around with me but I do keep one handy in the coop~better to have one and not need it than to not have one and need it, ya know!

It's all a matter of training. Some use one method, others use another but a rooster, if not mentally impaired in some way, can be trained just like any other animal.

I always wonder if people would tolerate a small dog rushing out to bite at them every time they walked into the pen or yard? If it can't be trained to stop, put the dang thing down so it won't hurt folks!

I've never had a roo that hasn't responded to one lesson of training....roos are smarter than they look.

Some folks keep roos for making chicks with the hens and for flock protection....from hawks, not from me!

I agree with everyone else, sometimes you just get a bad rooster. I have removed mine from the hens and put them outside of the fence looking in and they never left the outside of the run all day. Mostly they settled down a bit but whenever I have an issue I toss them over the fence and they hate it. But on the up side I do have a cookbook that has 365 chicken recipes! Good luck!:

My rooster used to have an attitude and was always circling to attack me and did a few times. I didnt want to get rid of him because he is my only one so everyday I would pick him up for 15 or 20 mins while I was feeding everyone else. I would feed the rabbits then the geese, the ducks and then when I was feeding the chickens I would let him down. I lost interest after about 2 weeks lol but ever since then he has pretty much avoided me and everyone else that walks through the yard.

Cure for a mean rooster;

Read about this recently and the poster says it works. This is advice from a 72 YO farmer who seems to know what he`s talking about. If it doesn`t work for you just say so. I hate to pass along bad advice. Prior to this info, I figured the only cure was an ax. Maybe there is hope after all.

Hold the offending rooster by the legs and dip his head in a bucket of water. When you see a few bubbles, put him on the ground and let him alone. His attitude should now be a lot different. Sometimes they need a second lesson, but not often........Pop

Does this really work? I want someone to let me know! I am willing to give it a try. My Barred Rock rooster is gigantic and stunning, but I just can not handle being attacked!!!
