Welcome!

Sorry, I have no experience with roosters, we are not allowed to have them here.

Just a thought, was he crowing excessively before you were no longer able to hear him?

I have a hen who occasionally loses her voice after excessive chatter and have documented these occasions here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/979074/can-a-chicken-lose-her-voice

He may just have overdone it!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Does your rooster appear ill in any other ways? You may want to post at "Emergencies, diseases, injuries, cures," thread just to get their suggestions.
