I bought a rooster about 4 months ago when he was 16 weeks. He's a pure light sussex. I have 8 hens and 2 ducks however one of my hens is also a light sussex. The rooster seems to be favouring her but is causing some wear and tear. Any suggestions on how I can stop it?

Hi there,

and welcome to BYC!

I agree with Dawg...get a saddle apron for the hens that are getting worn down. You might separate this particular hen out for a while to give her a break and maybe the rooster will find another hen to share his love with. :)

Great to have you aboard and enjoy BYC!

Welcome to BYC. A chicken saddle for this hen or temporary separation of the rooster from the flock would help. If fertile eggs are your goal, a hen retains fertility for at least 2 weeks after a rooster has been removed from the flock.

Yes, they need a trial separation - he's got 8 girls and has to wear out this one. If you let her sit out a week or two, maybe he'll take a fancy to the other 7.
