My run space outside my coop?

We built our coop inside what use to be a dog kennel area. It is ALOT of space but there is no grass at the moment, just weeds. What would you use for ground cover??

Amy, any living planted ground cover gets trompled in short order.

My run is sand, which drains well and is easy to rake over and fluff up.

Gravel, concrete or hay is not recommended.

anything planted will be eaten/trampled in a short time. There just really isn't anyway to keep something alive for a ground cover for them. It's a nice thought though.
