my serama roo

Hello!

Wow! I had this question a few days ago and I was going to create a thread to ask if roosters will ever sit on eggs! I mean, I’m not sure if the hormone that causes broodiness is present in the male’s body, but other than that, the temperature that his body creates would be the same as a hen’s, right? So if he somehow sat on the eggs for no specific reason, would they hatch?

Thanks for telling us that your rooster is acting like this! This is very interesting to me…

Are you 100% sure that it’s a rooster? Could it possibly be a pullet that you’ve just never seen lay an egg?

That actually brings me to another question for anyone who might know the answer: Do pullets ever go broody?

Apart from that, I have seen roosters making nests and trying them out, and some roosters like helping to take care of chicks, so I guess why not?

A pullet is a female under a year old.
And yes, they do go broody, and raise chicks. Most of my hens go broody for the first time as pullets, at around 8 months old. And hatch out their chicks without any problems.

Okay. Sorry if I was unclear, I thought a pullet was a female chicken that’s never laid an egg before? So my question was will a chicken go broody on other hens’ eggs before she lays her own first egg?
Oh ah, I don't know about that.
It has never happened with any of mine, so it would be pretty uncommon if at all.
Pullets are just young females, both before they start laying, and after; until they get to a year of age.

Yep, that’s a Serama rooster (I raise them as well). Wow, such a great dad ❤️ Little Lucy’s missing out!! I’ve had a few standard-size roosters station themselves next to a hen in a nesting box, but they didn’t directly sit on the eggs. Very cool! Good wishes for Peanut and Lucy!
