My SHTF flock

I will definitely be working towards a flock that is a very low maintenance utility breed rather then a bird that is correct to an SOP but high maintenance. If the breed I've chosen can't acclimatise to my block I'll probably start my own line.

I love this, I have done some Show birds and tried a lot of the different "dual purpose" breeds. They were all high maintenance, require a lot of store bought feed and I had many that fell sick/perished.

With the mixes I have had, I havent had the need to medicate any of them.

So, we were able to go and fetch the OEG over the weekend, He lost half of his tail while trying to catch him.

He is a lot younger then I though, but I believe he will give me what im looking for.

Good looking boy I like the single comb over rose comb etc. If he took a bit of catching that's a good sign too.

Thanks, yes thats another thing I would prefer to keep, we do not get extreme colds here, but we do have insane heat waves. For that reason alone I prefer a single comb, and hard feathers, instead of all that fluff

I think I'll be doing the same. Heat and humidity will be more of an issue then cold. I'm also thinking staying away from feathered legs and excessive feathers around the head. What do you think?

I'd like to find some Muffed Gamefowl but the only place I've found any is Sandhill Preservation.The min order for chicks is 25 and the max I can buy of this breed is 5.

Yes I agree, here in South Africa the Naked Necks are doing very well, but that is not a look I think I will get used to, maybe one or two, but not the main look for my whole flock

I'm not comfortable having chickens roosting in trees .Maybe I'm too protective ? lol
