I have one Partridge Silkie who is now almost five years old. She's been a great broody when I needed one and when she's not broody she lays adorable little off white colored eggs. It occurred to me that I should get a few more Silkie girls to take up the broody role in the future.

I have a 5x10 coop that's already filled with its quota of large fowls so I knew I'd have to build a separate coop. But there would be no way my husband would want to help nor would he want me spending lots (or any) money on it.

Thus I decided on the Silkie Coop challenge... build a coop with only things laying around on our small property. Anything that wasn't used or was underused was fair game. I took inventory of all the 2x4s and t1-111/plywood and started to formulate the plan, which takes a lot more effort then simply rushing out and buying products to use. I did have to talk myself out of purchases several times and in the end I only spent approximately $80 for the 3x4' coop for my 8 Silkie chicks. That's about how much they cost me too!

Above is the final product i placed it in the original run and fenced their area. It's covered by green panels to keep rain off the house and the babies as much as possible. The four white and four buffs love it!

The little coop is adorable.
We too will have to start a silkie coop for some soon to hatch (hopefully) chicks. I know Ill need ply for floor, maybe roof ,wife wants a metal roof? But we should have everything else from log siding to 1X6" T&G and lots of HW,@200' x 4' roll
I should be able to build it and a few breeder pens too. Then maybe I'll get back to the hen house. lol
