My silkie hen crowed..... Is she a roo? SILKIE EXPERTS UNITE!!!

Thanks for all the advice, I really do learn a lot on here!
I'm not interesting in showing birds or having them the standard of perfection, but I do want to dip my foot in the breeding pool. Obviously not with this one cause now i'm afraid it will be a frankenstein flock! So i'll work on making this guy a diaper and turn him into a house chicken. Later i'll research more....

There really is no selection here in GA. So for me to get a chicken that's not brown, white, or raw meat, i'm doing pretty good!!

THere must be a couple Silkie breeders in GA. I will look in my ASBC book tomorrow and let you know of any. Oh wait, I found it. Here we go. Aimee Crego of Signature Farm ([email protected]), Ronnie Garcia in Vidalia ([email protected]) & Lori Ledford in Gainesville ([email protected]). See if any of them have any good breeder quality ones for sale. I bet Aimee does.

Thank you! Two of them are on the other side of the state, I would be better off paying big bucks for one close! I will try the other one.

I got a white cochin hen, over a year old, brought her home and she's pecking back at this silkie! She will lower her head to him sometimes when he pecks her, but other times he will bow to her! I'm confused.......

And she's definitely a hen! Maybe a butch hen?

From the standpoint of genetics, originally silkies all had a modified rose comb, not a walnut comb; over the last 10-15 years breeders have worked to bring in true walnut combs. Probably about half of US exhibition silkies have true walnut combs and the other half have modified rose combs. If you know what to look for, you can see the difference, but it is realtively minor.

If the single comb is recessive and the father to this chicken had a rose comb, how does this chicken have the single comb?

Rose comb is dominant, so with one copy of the gene, the bird has a rose comb: R/r+ If both parents have one copy, then approximately 1/4 of their offspring will inherit R from each parent, 1/4 will inherit r+ from each parent, 1/4 will inherit R from father and r+ from mother, and the last 1/4 will inherit r+ from father and R from mother.

That translates into 1/4 who are R/R (homozygous, aka pure, for rose comb), 1/2 who are R/r+ (heterozygous for rose comb) and 1/4 who are r+/r+ (homozygous for not-rose comb).

Whew! I feel like im in highschool again! I'm not sure if the father had a rose or walnut comb but it was definitely not the single comb! Either way, he has a single comb and idc. I may try and breed for a few eggs and see what pops out. Maybe there are a few other people that would rather their silkie *pet* have a single comb. But i'm def not going near showing birds or breeding to make a living so I can't lose. Except if he is a girl and I wait for two girls to mate!
