Today my Silkie of nearly a year old laid an egg with a very soft shell, the shell can be squished without breaking. She was broody for a few months and two days ago she laid her first egg since being broody. Do you think that had something to do with the odd shell?

Oftentimes hens will lay these shell less eggs. sometimes they have a really really thin shell and sometimes they are just membrane. For some hens it marks the beginning/ end of their cycle and may last for a few days but if the problem persists for more than a few days you should add oyster shell or broken up egg shell to their food to strengthen the egg shell. Hens normally go broody at the end of their cycle so it could very well be associated with it or it could just be because she hasn't produced an egg for so long. Hope this helps!

I get this sometimes with my ex-batts too... great mess to clean up when you put ya finger through it!!! :p
