My Skitish Leghorns

What I'd really like to have is about 15 more of my barred rock. She's an egg machine. She's a little older, not sure how old. But literally nothing stops her. We got her at a chicken exchange 2 months ago. She laid the first day, and never took a break from any of the following: Bringing her home...tornado destruction of her coop while she was in it!....moving to new coop days later, and introduction of new hens to the flock. Seriously, we'd be swimming in eggs if we had more like her.

As with you, I'll never get Leghorns again, at least the brown ones. Maybe I'd try a white one some day, I dunno. But everyone of my other birds have a much better attitude than any of those three...

Gotta ask ya, Jeff, is she the one that supplies the "special" eggs? Sorry for the hijack. Sourland George

You mean the ones with the funk? No, that was a leghorn one day, and then strangely enough, EE the next day. 2 days in a row, and never once in the previous couple months we've been chicken owners.

Our Barred Rock, Gertie, lays perfect giant brown eggs almost every day. SHE'D never give me an egg with funk!

I have had some leghorns and when they were handled as chicks they can be very friendly. I dont know if there is much to do when they are adults. I really want to get some more though because they are so pretty and they DO free range so well. Ver good feed to egg conversion. Not a lap chicken though.

My Leghorn is def. the most flighty in my flock. They just want some fresh water and food and they'll give you some eggs in exchange, no need for the small talk and friendly pet stuff.

But, like was previously stated, if they are free ranged all day, you probably don't want to break them of this since it is helpful for survival.

My white leghorn, The Rebel Pearl aka Rebel, is very friendly. She's usually the first to jump on the bench next to me and stand on my lap. When I sit on my bench and toss the chickens pieces of bread, she likes to believe that I don't notice her standing next to me on the bench, eating from the opposite end that I'm tearing chunks off. I handled her occasionally when she was a chick and handle her daily now. I always compliment her beautiful combover and I get a special croak. She's totally not what I was expecting or read that leghorns would be like. Great egg layer, but the only one who would hide her eggs in the rafters.
