I was standing before the refrigerator this morning, with the usual pre-coffee stupor fogging my brain. I noticed something Lori had tacked on the door:

"Completer Ceremony"

There were dates and congratulatory comments on it, and my dim brain realized it was an invitation to my sons graduation this week. He has gone through the techinical training program at the high school as a CAD student and has earned a scholarship for his efforts. Go Tim!

But as I stood ther scratching my head, I wondered aloud: "When did we stop calling them graduates? That word, graduate, has a ring to it - it has class. But completer? What sort of minimalist, socialistic claptrap is that!?"

Lori looked at me. "It's early, David. Don't get started..."

SO Im wondering - when did 'completer' come into play? And why?

Lori is a hoot!

And I agree. Graduate means you worked your tail off and did it! Completer sounds like you presented your warm body daily.

Congratulations on you Graduation, Tim!

It may depend on the new state standards.

There are several different kinds of diplomas you can get now. One is the "real deal," that means you've met and passed all the state standards and graduated from a high school in the "normal" sense. This is the best kind to have if you are a young person wanting to attend college right after high school.

The other type is more of an equivalency degree, which might mean that someone earned their GED or completed their high school education through an alternative high school. It may not have been earned through an education as rigorous at that at a traditional high school.

Feel free to call your district's administration office and ask about it.

This falls into the "Just when you think you've heard it all" category. What does that even mean? It sounds like something the good folks at Despair.com came up with. What a way to undervalue a great achievement!

Congrats on your son's GRADUTATION!

...don't get me started. Rather than "raising the bar" this country is throwing it on the ground.

I can't remember the exact details and numbers but the following is a close approximation...

Several years ago a national science fair was held. I believe there is one in the east part of the country and one in th west. Seems the report stated that something like 50,000 students participated in the fair. In the same year a science fair was held in China...they counted the student attendance as being well over 1,000,000. So much for the USA's "world leader" status, rather than urging our kids to a higher level of excellence we're now giving them a "completer" certificate just for showing up. Of course, it appears to be a sign of the times....after all, when he was in the senate our current president voted "Present" more times than "yay" or "nay".

Oh, sheesh.

I mean, come on! Kids "graduate" from Kindergarten these days and they can't use the term for a high schooler with CAD certifications? Speechless.
