My Splash Cochin Bantam Roo- Opinions please~want to show him

Thanks! But where would I get Splash Cochin Bantams with great type? I have never seen any, and breeders of Splash are so hard to find. I wouldn't know where to begin upgrading them. My customers have been happy to pay $10 a piece for PQ Splash Cochins. No one has even asked me for better quality. In this economy very few can afford good quality birds. Can you help me locate some good quality Splash? It just doesn't seem like there is a market for pricey SQ Splash Cochin Bantams. ?

You could check Heavenly Springs Farm, they had a splash hen with excellent type last time I was there...and it was for sale. Splash should be one of the varieties that have spectacular type because they are the product of blue x blue matings and if you are breeding blue, black and splash, you will get this in your breedings if you breed all three. Check the cochins international website, they should have some good links as well. I know there is someone breeding largefowl blues around us that are so so type wise, but once in a while you see a SPECTACULAR large blue or splash male for sale. Also...the original male pictured has vulture hocks. A DQ for showing.

I have seen some GREAT splash cochins from Joe Mazur and from Sheryl Butler. Sheryl's blues do great in show, and we all know what a blue on blue breeding produces.....

You don't necessarily need splash rooster, you can breed two good blues together and get splash. It all depends on how fast you want to get there and how much you want to pay. You may want to invest in a good blue pair, Jamie Matts in NY has blues, Tom Roebuck in VA raises blues, Matt McCammon here in Indiana raises some very good blues. Breeders that raise blues for exhibition do have splash--Good typed blues will produce very good splash birds.

Splash cochins are not a recognized variety in the standard so folks don't show them much, at least around here. I just sold my entire folk of blue and splash to a gal a few hours from here, I'd be more then happy to PM you with her information if your interested. My suggestion to you if you want to raise birds for exhibition is to buy from someone who is doing the work and raising good birds. Unfortunatley you can't make a silk purse from a sows ear, in other words you need good stock to produce good stock. I've been where you are when I first started raising cochins, it wasn't until I bought from reputable breeders who were doing the work that I saw results. I can help you with some contacts privatley, just drop me a PM:)

Edited to add this splash cochin cockerel, he's not the perfect bird by any means, but I do think he's a good splash male.
