My splay legged baby isn't thriving!

Basically when I say cull, if you see it's quality of life suffering, then make the decision. It is a divide for what you want and what is the best for the bird. If there is hope, then keep going, if the leg pops out of place or it starts starving to death because of internal issuse, then decide from there.

Well, I won't let her suffer...
but won't just cull her because she 'might' not make it.
I'm not that strong.
I do have a whole pen of layers... she can live there...
if she decides to give life a shot...

I will take her out for PT and walk her... will she get cold?
she is a week old now... and she is a lot bigger than the ones hatching right now, just the others are like 4 times that big! wow!

her feathers are coming in, just slower...
and she IS eating, just not sure if that is why she is slower,
I take her to the food every time I visit.

I will make her her own pen with a divider tonight...
then might put her with the new hatchlings too... gotta set that pen up tonight! they are pipping!
one hatched last night but never dried, just died...
weird...

I'm not liking hatching sometimes...

I have one that is the same way. She seems to be eating fine, I have seen her get around. She is just a lot smaller. I took the bandaids off today because it looked alot better, and I think she is going to be OK. And this was a bad case, she couldnt stand up at all, and they both went straight out.

My biggest worry was that she was eating and drinking, but I have watched and made sure she can do it. The others do step on her sometimes, but I read somewhere on here that being with the other ones actually encourages them to get up and moving, and build those muscles.

Sadly sometime today the splay legged chick committed suicide, she dunked her head in the waterer and drown I guess...
or she just died and fell there...

one of my newly hatched chicks from last night also died right away...
dang, it's been a bummer of a friday the 13 for me.
three new chicks are fine...
five eggs to go... one is pipped and zipping... and peeping up a storm...

It took my chick with splayed leg 11 days... now you'd never know it had a problem.

Awww...I'm so sorry about your baby. I've had one from each hatch the past two weeks with splay legs but they developed it immediately after hatching. I used a twist-tie to hobble the legs and sat them in a separate small box with a towel to prop them up. Since they aren't very active the first day after hatching, catching it right away is the key to success. Within 24 hours, if not less, they were doing just fine.

I did have one hatch yesterday where its feet are like rubber. I've never seen that before and although I kept it separated it didn't appear to improve. I put it back with the others this morning and will let nature take its course. Anyone know what causes this?
