Sometimes other hens can be very aggressive and cruel. But here’s my story, I hatched her out with others, she’s a black silkie hen, raised her in my room until it was time for her to be an adult and go outside to be a big girl and explore life to its fullest. That time came, she was with some of her friends and doing great when all of a suddenly, one of my older hens decided to be a big bully. You hear about the pecking order and yes it’s true hens and roosters go throw it. Well my big older chicken decided to attack, literally attack my black silkie. They apparently had a dispute that the silkie lost. I had no idea this dispute had happened until it was feeding and changing water time. When I got outside she was down. Could not get up. Her head was hit several times, she was bleeding, as we know silkies brains are on the outside of there skulls so it’s very easy to knock them out because of it. They can very easily get wry neck and brain damage. She got hit multiple times that her head was sooo swelled she could not lift it. Here’s a pic:: it’s hard to see since she’s soo black. I had absolutely no hopes for her. Her treatment was Vitamin B complex in her water and a high protein feed. 20%. First day I tried to syringe vitamin water in her. I was only getting about 6 cc, I was afraid she was dehydrated. I cleaned her head and left it opened. I didn’t put anything in it. Didn’t want to risk causing more swelling. Day two comes she still not eating or drinking on her own. She was sooooooo thin, by this point it was only a matter of time to get the hole dug and get ready to bury her, I didn’t have any hopes. Day three she poops, it’s very dark my fear she’s internally bleeding. Head still swelled up like a ballon but has decreased a little. Still unable to lift her head. So also acting as though she was blind and tried to peck but would miss. Day four she chirps? WHAT? Yeh she made a noise. I felt her crop it was full, full of food. OMG. The swelling had gone down and she can lift her head. Day five. she’s eating and drinking on her own. And her head feathers are starting to come back. I thought for sure after day two she was a goner but now I see she’s doing better. Today, she is walking around my room, checking things out and talking. Oh she’s a talker. Lol. I strongly believe giving her some time and getting the vitamin water in her the first day helped her recovery. As far as being blind, she’s not. The swelling was so bad that she just couldn’t see to eat properly. Once it went down, she was able to see and do the proper things Chickens do. Scratching at the food and getting it in the water. Lol. Well that’s my success story on a silkie that I thought for sure was not going to make it. Hope u enjoyed.
