i decided to hatch... i built a fridgeabator and i made it to fit and turn 60 eggs... i put 60 eggs, and the turner arm gave out... fail... so my friend setup his newly acquired hovabator... he got it that same day too... so i left 48 eggs in there, and my turner was turning them, but still, the arm kept coming off of the motor... sigh... so i had to rig two cables out of the top vents to turn it... clamped them both, and i would move the clamp left and right depending on the side i want to turn... so manual turning it is... candled at day 10, and i got rid of a bunch of infertile eggs... bummer... i guess my pullets are too young... i forgot how many i had... so lock down day came... i candled them and only had 17 good eggs... sigh...

i didn't want to mix them up since they were all from different breeding groups, so i thought i made this metal cloth holding pen on top of the water bowl, yet under the racks... i got a pip day 20... i left for the day, and when i came back, i saw it hatched, but i didn't see the chick... it was UNDER THE RACK i made... sigh... i didn't want to open it and put it back up because others were pip'd... so i left him in there... i left and came back, i found one inside the water dish... AAAAAAAGH!!!... i had to do something... so i got some of the same warm water from the top dish, and sprayed it in the incubator as soon as i opened the door, and slipped a DVD case under the bowl to put it tightly under the wire cloth... 72hrs later, 11 or so hatched... and one had zipped... i had to take out the hatched young ones, but i didn't want to shrink wrap that one egg... but when i decided to open take them out, i noticed that it was already dead... it shrink wrapped, but i didn't even open the incubator... i thought it was strange... i doubt anyone opened it when i was not there, it's in my room... anyways... i put them in their brooder and noticed two had spraddle legs... ugh... i searched BYC real quick, and found the band aid trick... boom, problem solved...???

so i threw them in the brooder and put a styrofoam plate with little glass marbles and chick starter... i left, and when i came back, there was one on the plate, and i guess the slick plate made it get spraddle leg... ugh... great... so i looked at the other two, and the band aids had fallen off... i got mad, so i used a different bandage... one of the ones for the kids, not the cloth type ones... they're sticker i guess... two are fine, but one still can't stand on their feet... it's been an entire day with the bandage, and yet no signs of improvements... oh well... but i'm gonna keep trying... right...?

so anyways... here are what you are really here to see...

although, it was a disaster and some what unsuccessful, i think it is a great hatch... i'm proud of my fuzzy butts, and have fun making feeding calls and playing with them all day... my friend's tripped when i showed them how i taught them how to eat... HAHA... no one knows how amazing chickens really are...

thx for reading...

oh, and they are all OEGB's... those light colored ones are self blues... there are also two mille fleurs, and a couple of mixed blues... hopefully some bared blues... i can't wait until they feather out...

Wow! That's a lot of work! Your babies are beautiful! Hope the band-aids work!

I have one with funny feet and I made her shoes but it was too late to fix.. She's one of my sweetees and her curled toes don't hinder her a bit. Stuff definately happens. You are a trooper and I know you will enjoy your babies!

thx... they are purrty...

two of the spraddle legged chicks look fine, but i'm still not taking off the bandaids... the other one still looks a little troubled.. only time will tell...

Cute babies Gumbii! I've got blue wheaten OEGB's coming from Ideal this week, and my daughter was wondering how small they would be. Could you possibly get a picture of them next to a ruler or something that we could judge size by?
