I have had chickens for just a year but it has been the best year of my life! At first I raised three in school (Tiny, Cami, and Gerty), but a year later I brought home four more (Tilly, Esther, Patsy, Nutmeg)!! It has been an amazing four months with my Super Seven flock. The first chicken I ever had was a buff orpington named Iris. I loved her with all my heart until we discovered early on that she was a rooster. I knew I couldn't take a rooster home, but I still raised her in school. Then I found Maraca, a black australorp. I also fell in love with Emmet, a rooster who I raised as well. Then my friend gave me Cami. She is a black australorp and is the oldest and the top of the pecking order. Days later, Gerty (Easter Egger) arrived in a box at school with her brother, Nikki (a barred rock who we didn't know was a rooster at the time). I raised these Iris, Emmet, Maraca, and Cami for about a month in school when six more chicks arrived. I fell in love with the smallest, but unfortunately she belonged to someone else. On the day my class took all the chickens home, I stayed after. I found that the small yellow chick I had fallen in love with was still there! I scooped her up and named her Tiny. However, I could only take home four chickens. I decided to let Maraca go to live on a farm. I didn't feel like we connected, and I think she is happier in her life now. So, I took Tiny, Gerty, Cami, and Nikki home. For months we all lived happily, until one morning when I heard a strange noise coming from outside. I went out to the chickens and I saw Nikki crowing. Well, trying at least. I refused to believe he was a rooster and let him stay for about another month. But then I knew I couldn't keep him, so we let him go live on the same farm as Maraca. I haven't seen him since, and I miss him, but I know that he is happier with some hens with him at all times. 6 months went by and I raised more chickens in school. This time I just stuck to four. I then brought home Patsy (Columbian Wyandotte), Esther (Light Brahma), Nutmeg (Barred Rock), and Tilly (Golden Polish). All seven chickens have been living together for about four months, but even the Super Seven have issues. I'm glad I now have a place to ask questions and get advice!

Other than chickens, I love math, science, theater, dance, singing, art, reading, writing, biking, hiking, and walking my beloved dog. I have three sisters who all live at home. I am a proud VEGAN (woot woot!) and activist. I am excited to be a part of Backyard Chickens!!!
