That's why I shared what I was thinking as I tried to figure it out, because sometimes one person's thoughts can help someone else see (something) that makes it clear.
For example, if you saw clear saddle feathers, you would then know they are males-- and being able to see the birds from different angles as they move around can make it much easier to see the shape of the feathers. Or maybe you would be able to pick them up and look at the actual feather shapes.
