I had two gorgeous, sweet Campine roosters. Big brother busted us and we had to remove the roosters. I don't blame the neighbors for complaining because the biggest one was starting to crow loudly and all day long. Luckily, we found a Christian boys home that also takes in rescue pets such as roosters. My handyman and my husband caught the two boys and popped them into boxes.
I was unprepared for the sorrow that emanated from my flock once the boys were pulled from the coop. My small rooster has two hens that always follow him around. They are all 3 kind of shy, sweet and sensitive. One of his hens started crying! She called for about 2 minutes and then stopped. My kids, handyman, husband and I were all just in agony. The rest of the birds had their beaks opening and closing. They were subdued and gathered together in one corner, as if they couldn't believe that we were capable of something so awful. They are very pampered birds and this is the worst thing that's ever happened.
I drove the boys to their new home. When I peeked into their boxes as I was unloading them from the car, I saw very sad eyes. It just broke my heart. We said our good-byes and left teary-eyed. I can't imagine how bewildered they must feel, leaving their hens, that they took such good care of, leaving their familiar coop and run.
There won't be treats such as pasta, rice, and yogurt in this new place since they were specific about not treating the chickens as pets. The good thing is that we will be able to visit them whenever we want and the Home does not eat the chickens. I could imagine worse for them and I couldn't find a better situation for them. I will just pray for my poor boys and hope for the best.
