My Take on the Lowe's Playhouse Coop

Thanks so much for all of the nice comments! I'm not sure which came first, nice people, or their chickens.

Yes, it is a self-latching door, and yes, I made my husband drill a hole for a string to put through so we don't trap our children, or ourselves, in with the chickens!

I don't mind at all if people copy our idea. We can provide more details, dimensions, pictures, etc. if people are interested. My husband designed it as he went, so his measurements are on a lot of different sheets of paper, but we could cobble something together. I got so much out of this forum and used many of your ideas while I was planning, so I am happy to share as many of my ideas as I can.

Oh - and this playhouse you might know, is normally around $300, so plan for that in your budget if you want to try to make this coop. We were certainly lucky when we got that price.

I picked up two of these playhouse kits for $80 dollars from a Lowes store that was about 2 hours away from me last Wednesday. I was going to post about it at the time because the store had a total of 9 of them in stock.

However, when the employees found out how cheap they were, they hauled them into the back for themselves. They said that they were going to wait until Black Friday and purchase them at that time for holiday gifts for their kids. I guess that they will get an even greater discount then...

Your coop looks great! Thanks for posting the pics of what they look like before assembly. I was kind of curious as to "how" it all goes together. Mine will be in boxes until springtime when I get my own chooks, so I am really enjoying any of the pictures that other people post.

Nice job.

We're in a similar situation...just bough the Toys 'R' Us Savannah playhouse on clearance.

I am interested in more detail on the run design if you can. Do you know what kind of connectors your husband used on the 2x4s? From the pictures, it looks like there's some steel peeking through on all the joints. What is that?

Very nice coop and run! I am curious as to how you will get in there to clean. Does one of the sides open or will you get a step stool to go thru the door?

$62 for paint?

I am painting my 1600 sq. ft. 4 bedroom house right now for half that much!

Ok folks, here is a little tip for you if and when you are going to paint something.

Go to your local paint store, whether it be Sherwin Williams, Benjamin Moore, etc. They always have mistint and misorder paint in the back stockroom that you can usually get for $1 a gallon or less. My Sherwin Williams store would actually give it too me free!

If you don't see an exact color in there that you like, start mixing some together until you get a shade you do like. I have done this for years and 99 times out of a hundred, I can get the exact color my wife is wanting, and will save hundreds on the paint.

Sorry to hijack your thread, I just felt the need for a public service announcement.

very nice coop btw. Well done!
