my two chickens not what I was told

I've been looking at pics on feathersite and Bisqit and Gravy are not what I was told. They are american game bantams. I was told Gravy was a quail antwerp belgian bantam but he looks just like the game bantam pics. I didn't see his color on there.
I was told Bisqit was a black japanese but she looks just like the black game banty. Even has the blue legs. Glad I finally know now so when I rehome the rooster babies, I can tell people what they are.

I noticed it said they were bred for pitfighting. I guess that menas cock fights?? That's strange seeing how freindly and easy going mine are.

They may have originally been bred for fighting but Game Bantams are now bred for exibition, kind of like English Bulldogs.

Sometimes your average backyard chicken looks a LOT different from show quality birds of the same breed.

Another thing that happens is some people have been misinformed about what breed they have or don't care to do the research, that's why you see so many "Americauna/Arucana" that are really Easter Eggers. It does you credit that you took the time to figure it out.

I'm a research person all the way. I've looked up everything I have other than dogs and cats. I have parrots, frogs, tortoises, snakes and the list goes on. I want to make sure they get what they need
I've been looking the chickens up since I got them. I saw a link to feathersite and that's where I found them...great site!!

Why do they cut the combs off the roosters? Is that a show thing? His spurs are gone too.

I know what you mean, that's what led me to BYC so many years ago. It was next to impossible to find info on how to raise chickens long term, all I could find on vet care was: if it's sick butcher it!

Yeah, dubbing the comb is done for show. Originally it was for fighting and frostbite. To minimize injury in both cases.

That's interesting they do that for showing but then again, I like the combs on roos. Don't know how old Gravy was when we got him but his comb was still raw looking across the top.
