It was certainly not intended that way.

The fact is, however, that "netting" is not safe. I would be surprised if any of the long-term chicken keepers here felt that was a safe pen, esp. for nighttime, and a high % of posts assessing new coops/runs on this forum DO address safety issues. That's one of the reasons we're HERE, after all.

No need to take it personally--learn from the experiences of others instead!

I love that you gave detailed instructions and measurements.

What works for one may not work for another, but with something like this to give people an idea, the possibilities are endless.

I'd have to have hardware wire. No getting around it. But the frame itself I love.

Made smaller you could use it to put chicks out for their first couple of weeks of hanging in the yard.

With wire it would be great for rabbits.

It's posts like this that are so helpful to someone who has never built anything. I've built things, but heck if someone lays it out for me, that works.

I have some small runs done with PVC. They were trial and error. I have some pieces in the backyard right now, but short on some of the connectors.

If it wasn't 104 out there I'd be putting together a project, so maybe tonight I'll come back in and figure out what parts I need to get from your list.

I have a big need for some quail pens right now.

I can she how you can tarp the run and add shade. Some places don't need more that a open air coop, so this has great possibilities.

I agree, I read that post as "scolding", but I don't think anyone really meant it that way.

I feel that there is a growing number of folks on this forum who are quit quick to point out that there really is only one way to keep chickens.

We MUST have a minimum of 4 ft^2 - nothing less is acceptable
We MUST have a minimum of 10 ft^2 - nothing less is acceptable
We MUST have aprons/hardware cloth - nothing less is acceptable
We MUST have predators - because everyone does


One thing that got me into chickens -- lots and lots of ways to do it right. I'm somewhat getting tired of the same information constantly being regurgitated. The OP seems to know his property quite well. If they say they don't have predators, then I believe them, and I'm certainly not going to tell them that they are "doing it wrong".

Now you can easily replace my flmisy netting with chicken wire, hardware cloth , kevlar , chain link , or even old armour plate off some decommisioned tanks. whatever works for you. Some people dont want or need to spend 1000 bucks to house 30 bucks worth of meat birds. I dont show my animals or even understand why someone would but to each their own. I raise chickens for meat and eggs. Please build what you need this might just spark an idea on how to do what you need. Thats why I posted this and took the time to take the pics and upload them. My needs were to keep the chickens off my carport and craping all over my sports car. And having to have an easter egg hunt every morning. I will post an update when I get it all finished up wednesday morning as it is 95 deg and 90 % humidity. to hot to continue working on it.

I built something very similar this to extend the length of my run from my chicken tractor. The only problem I had was that I use 1/2 pvc because I had a bunch left over and it is just too flimsy for longer lengths, so I might have to replace it with something like 1" or 1 1/4". I used chicken wire and attached with zip ties. I am not as worried about predator proofing as much as for keeping the chickens in and away from my garden. At night they go into the top of the coop to sleep and it the door is closed up tight. I live in the middle of a small town and the first week we had our chicks out we had a raccoon come visit and crawl all over the coop. I could see little muddy foot prints all over it, so I'm pretty happy that I do have a secure area for them to sleep in, but I am also glad to see that I'm not the only one that thought to do something with lightweight PVC.

I really wish I would have seen your instructions before I might have added a door to mine which would have made some things easier.
