My Vadakorian Landrace Project Moving Forward

I call them my "Vadakoriani del Veneto" with Italians so I guess the proper name is "Venician Vadakors" or maybe just "Vadakorian Fowl", what do y'all think sounds best?

Vadakoriani del Veneto sounds good.

I think egyptian fayoumis fit in your project. smart, alert birds who can take care of their own food by foraging. the only breed that never get marek's.

I wish I knew how to get my hands on some, maybe when I move over to the states in a couple of years. Idk how broody they are but they definitely seem like a good idea to add in! They don't get Marek's?

someone went to egypt and brought hatching eggs to greece. if you know anyone who will travel to egypt it is easy to contact a vet from that area who will provide the eggs.

fayoumis don't get broody often but they would be just a part of your breeding program. and definitely no marek's.

This is the pair as of today, I'm really happy with how the phoenix rooster Corriente is developing his full new tail. Kikimora has been laying gorgeous high bloom dark green eggs that almost look dark blueish grey!

I'm also getting 3 phoenix hens on Saturday and one of them is Silver Duckwing with dominant white! I'm hoping to use these hens to cross with any sons I get from Corriente & Kikimora that carry a blue egg gene. They're about 11 months old and laying so they'll have another 7ish months before I have a make to cross them to. I might just keep them with my other phoenix rooster Kinger for now and possibly let them sit on eggs if they go broody!

That's crazy interesting! If I can find a breeder I could probably get them shipped to me. I did a bit if reading on their Marek's resistance, perhaps crossing them with red jungle fowl and crossing those F1 birds to a Vadakorian bird could work, jungle fowl are also very very resistant to avian flu and other diseases so it would be a super awesome cross.

Someday I really want to add Rose comb with the spike to my project, maybe the Landrace could have both rose comb and single comb. I reallyyy love the look of a bird with a good rose comb, just imagine that with a blue egg gene! However I've been avoiding it since Rose comb in it's pure form causes bad fertility, but perhaps if I have higher rooster to hen ratios that could be avoided. Idk, but I definitely want to look into adding Rose comb at some point

I did find this super cool looking Sebright Old English cross and I mean how could you not love that comb, it looks so cool!!! Even with one single comb gene, it still looks just like the comb on a hamburg or obviously a sebright.

Maybe if I did a similar cross but with red jungle fowl or phoenix and something like a sebright or rose comb bantam I could get good broodiness and get F1 rooster with normal fertility since they'd be Rr, then I could cross those to Vadakorian hens 🤔

So I got them today! Before I show you these hens up close, I'll admit I had suspected that these hens weren't pure phoenix. With the one hen being white and but one having yellowish legs I thought there was a good possiblity of white leghorns being mixed in there background, but yet... Here I am taking a closer look at them realizing two of the hens have what looks like pea combs!!! I thought the yellow legs and white plumage meant leghorn and yet that's seems to not be the case.

My new theory is they're maybe second generation Phoenix Yokohama crosses which would be why some are black and the yellow leg gene isn't present in all of them and it would explain the combs and lack of wattles. However I might be wrong, afterall Yokohama are incredibly rare here, but I can't help but wonder...

Anyhow I wanna know what y'all think? Perhaps the two with pea combs could be even better additions to the Vadakorian project! Afterall I think that adds in good genes for smaller combs and wattles which would remove the need for dubbing, idk

I really love how high they hold their tails, and they're just such eye candy!!! It's so interesting how when they walk and move around their you can see the gears in their heads moving and it's so fascinating seeing birds that are visibly thinking and having actual thoughts. I'm so used to seeing birds that kinda look like there's no thinking and they're just kinda existing like lol goofballs lol. These three seem to be very intelligent hens! They might not trust me yet, but they're certainly curious as to who I am, they're cautious and quite flighty but take moments to just observe and think about what's going on. When they think I don't see them they'll be starting at me kinda observing me do things like fill feeders, clean and refill waterers, or hold my rooster Baby Bee and give him his daily cuddles he demands lol. I'm really hoping I see more of that thinking, intelligent, yet curious nature in future generations!

Overall I think I'm going to use these hens to cross with a good son of Kikimora. Obviously I'd be testing for a blue egg gene since I'm hoping to remove the brown egg gene entirely. I just need to hatch enough birds to get a son with characteristics that compliment these 3 hens and has a blue egg gene from Kikimora. I still plan on hatching eggs from Kikimora in April, with egg collection starting in the first week since it would be a little over 30 days since I separated her from Vadakor.
