My Welsummer & Barred Rock chicks- can they really be sexed at 1 day??? PICTURES

That video was Very very interesting, thanks for the link. Those little chicks are much more resilient than I could've imagined!

Thank you for all of the answers! It really helped.

Found this info on the U of K agriculture webiste:

Feather sexing is based on color or growth
rate characteristics carried the sex-determining
Feather sexing is possible for some chicken
breeds. For example, the Barred Plymouth
Rock carries a gene for barring (B) that is car-
ried on the Z chromosome. This gene pro-
duces a white bar on an otherwise black
feather. The gene is incompletely dominant
over the non-barring gene (b). In adults, the
male with two barring genes (BB) has feathers
with broader white bars than those of the fe-
male which has only one of the barring genes
(B_). As a result, females have an overall
lighter color (see Figure 2).

When hatching out purebred Barred Plymouth
Rocks, the sex of the chicks can be determined based on the size and shape of a light colored spot on the
top of the head. At hatch males have a large white head spot. It is
much smaller and more narrow in females.

I agree that both the chicks seem to be male for the same reason listed above. I have raised these for several years. Not sure about the BR.I have some but have not hatched chicks from them yet this year. gs
