My wife got me ducklings!!

Phew... White shavings it is.... I'm going to pull out my respirator to swap out the brooder.... I gave the little fuzzy-butts swim time last night and then after taking them back down to the box, my head felt like it was packed with styrofoam!!! UGH!

Ducks for Christmas must be one of the coolest gifts I've ever got.... to think I got my wife carpet, paint and bamboo floors as her present....

I got hubby a pair of welsh harlequins last year for Christmas. Here's a picture of their first swim at three days old... one day after they arrived.

To me there is nothing cuter than baby ducklings in a bowl. I also watch them them the entire time and take them out when their little backs start looking wet. I then gently wrap them in a towel and take them back to the brooder so they can preen, get warm, and dry.

Brooding in the winter is a smelly endeavor. I found the feed smells worse than most of their waste. The more greens, meal worms and whatnot you give them, the less they stink. If you have the time, bringing them out of the brooder to play on towels or old blankets that you can throw in the wash, helps keep the smell down. We made a play area in our living room that they could run around in while we ate dinner and watched movies. When it was time for them to head back to the brooder I just threw all the stuff into the wash. Exercise is good for their little bodies and watching them is good for our hearts.

My co-worker was just telling me that I am indeed the walking contradiction. I have chickens, think ducklings are the cutest thing in the world, build fast cars, cook great food and am an avid firearm enthusiast. My little duckies took their first swim in the bucket that I use for the brass polishing media!! (super cleaned out of course)

That picture could be framed there, with the little guys and the cool bowl!!
