My Wisconsin coop. Winter proof and warm.

Cold winter nights can make a flock owner worry. Frozen waterers and frostbite on birds cost us time and energy. Last year we eliminated this worry. We installed electricity for lights and heat emitters. My coop isnt pretty, but its almost completely insulated. Two windows were installed to give the birds natural light year round. Here is my converted lean-to turned chicken coop.

Warmer chickens are happier chickens. My chickens have garage condo for winter. It is heated by wood stove, just enough to be above freezing. Spring thru fall they are in outdoor coop. I know many chicken owners keep chickens in way colder environments than you and I. Maine, and Canada are way colder than where we are. They keep winter hardy varieties and treat frost bite of combs often. It is doable if you are set up properly with correct ventilation and adequate amount of chickens, as well as ideal feeding. My 6 lil girls would end up freeze dried if I had them out during winter. My window light source is limited, so I provide them 12 hours of light on a timer, so they don't go nutty. LOL LOL I use modified Crock pots to keep their water from freezing.. Sometimes when wood stove finishes, temperature drops slightly below freezing.
