Thinking about breeding...

Don't want to ever sell a chick that could ever possibly transfer MG to their flock...

Would they test positive after vaccination because of the vaccine containing live virus?

If an 8 -10 week old chick already had MG, what would happen if they were vaccinated?

Any advice please? Thanks soo much! I'm sorry there are so many questions, but there are so many of you with so much wisdom I have been reading for years and I appreciate you all so much! ❤️

The MG vaccine is a live vaccine. Its purpose is to prevent clinical signs of infection - NOT to prevent infection itself.

"The vaccine is recommended for use in healthy chickens only. It is essential that the chickens be maintained under good environmental conditions and that exposure to disease viruses be reduced as much as possible in the field. Do not use in breeder chickens where negative MG serology is desired or required."

I recommend AGAINST.

Thank you for the info!
What do you think about it for an existing flock that are now carriers - I added chicks back in April and then my older flock was diagnosed with MG last month. I do not plan to breed this flock, but if I could prevent the young birds from getting it that would be great. I have not mingled them yet, but they are fence to fence at this point. I'm so sad I know they will be carriers for life... but maybe I should try to vaccinate my young before any symptoms? Thanks again for any advice!

I'll tell you now, you won't like my answer. I'm an NPIP Participant, and arguably a breeder (though my birds don't currently satisfy me, so I don't sell them to others). In trhe event of MG or MS, I'd cull my entire flock (see signature below, its more than a handful of birds), sanitize the facilities, leave the ground fallow for a year, then start over. I won't knowingly sell a sick bird, or a potential carrier.

Many people maintain closed flocks of MG positive (or at least vaccinated, potentially MG exposed) birds quite successfully, for their own enjoyment as pets, egg producers, etc. I just don't happen to be on that road, myself.

A further consideration, I free range my birds in a part of FL which still has wild turkey. MG vaccinated birds can shed the disease, and make turkeys sick.

So, my considerations are different from many, but that's my decision and why, since you asked.

I do not plan on breeding any of this flock. However I do want to keep them around as I love them very much! I live on a very large farm and have multiple sites for chicken purposes... if i were to breed it would be on untouched soil far away with brand new chicks. When I added new chicks back in April I did not know the older girls were sick or going to get sick. But for the young, vaccinate or not?

Your answer is just fine, I have actually thought about it...
