Mycoplasma

Last week, I had two chickens come down with what I assume Mycoplasma. Eyes were swollen shut and bubbling. We put down the infected. This week another has a bubbling eye. I have ordered Denagard but it won't be here for a few days. We took the infected chicken out of the flock. We disinfected the entire coop using a vinegar and water mix and cleaned their feeders. Once the Denagard gets here, I give in their water as a preventative? Each month? Is it safe to eat their eggs during the Denangard treatment or should I dispose of them? Trying to educate myself on this bacteria because I am sure the rest of the flock is infected just not showing symptoms yet. Any advice will help. We will disinfect the coop again once the Denangard shows up and the birds begin treatment.

If it's MG (I would recommend that when you lose one with symptoms that you have a necropsy done to confirm) then your flock is carrying it. Some birds may not show symptoms, but they can still pass it on. Treatment can help the symptoms, but it's not a cure, the infected birds are carriers, symptoms can return during times of stress. Tylosin, Injectable Tylan 50 given orally, and oxytetracycline are also used.

There is no egg withdrawl for Denagard or Tylosin.

Hi Coach, great response.

Ive finally realised my chickens have MG. I had 3 pullets in May 2022, one passed away after suffering terrible sneezes (eventually sneezing blood). One had a crustation on her ear which fell off out the blue, the other had no symptoms. Fast forward to now ive purchased 3 new hens to add to existing 2, i separated for about 1 weeks (not long enough i know). But now my Lohman is sneezing, has a notable sweet smell (from what I've read is MG), shes lethargic but still eating & drinking & sunbathing with the rest of the girls. This has been going on about 2 weeks (they've been mixed for 3 weeks)Shes a bit slow when running for treats & also misses her food a lot i assume poor beak/ eye coordination, some swelling on one eyelid and a tiny bit of bubbling out her eye, open mouth breathing. All signs of MG to me.

Anyway, i have some powder tylosin50. I dont exactly know how to administer. Since the other birds are otherwise fine i dont want to treat them when its unnecessary. Ive weighed the Lohman and shes about 1420g. Do i add it to a large water feeder? (How do i know she drinks enough / prevent others drinking) do i mix it and then syringe X amount into her beak? (How do i know how much).

Or do i leave her and hope she gets over it, so far im not worried in her condition, shes still sleeping with the rest of the girls.

Any help is appreciated!

For the Tylosin powder you mix 1 tsp of the powder into 1 gallon of drinking water for 5 days. I would put her in a wire crate in the run so she can see and be seen by the others, but has the medicated water. The injectable medication can be given orally, but I wouldn't know how to mix the powder to do that in the appropriate dose. The dose in the water is based on the average amount they normally drink daily.
