We received a 'mystery box' of chicks as a rescue situation.
We have no documentation on breeds and are wondering what we have.

We think the black ones might be Astralops.

But the rest, no idea, so we're asking for a little assistance.

Any thoughts?

Cheers!

Could be Australorps but I don't see any white spots on their heads. Mine all had a white spot on their heads at that age. I can't suggest an alternative, though. I've no idea on the others but they are SO cute I just had to write!

The third pic looks like a Silver Spangled Hamburg. Looks just like the two I got with my rainbow layer pack from McMurray. I too think I have Australorps that have no white spot (maybe, or they could be Minorcas?) I have two that look just like your blacks. I have no Idea on the second picture. I guess we will see when ours start to grow up. :)

A white head spot would indicate barred or cuckoo markings which wouldn't be Australorp.
There are lots of breeds and mixes that they could be. It's like looking at a black puppy and presuming it's a lab. It might be, they're common, but unless it looks like one when grown...

Thank you!!! I completely agree its a Silver Spangled Hamburg after seeing some chick pics. I also agree that the black ones could be Minorcas. This box is from McMurray so the fact that you mentioned rainbow layer mix also narrows down the breed options. This is a big help!! :D

Right you are, Debid, my mistake. I confused by Barred Rocks which had a white spot, with my Australorps, which did not. I stand corrected so thank you. Yes, these do look like my Australorps, some white in the face but mostly black everywhere else.

Thanks,
Guppy

could the black ones be Jersey Giants? i think i was told that if the bottoms of their feet are yellow and they have a normal comb they are jerseys. i got one like that in my assortment from McMurrays

Its been a little over 2 months, and I wanted to let you all know what we ended up with.

The grey chicks - White Jersey Giants
The black chicks - Australorps
The yellow chicks - Delawares and Leghorns (didn't post a pic as I knew there were too many breeds that are yellow as chicks)
And our single is a Silver Spangled Hamburg

Of all 22 chicks, we know 1 Delaware is a rooster, we still aren't sure if the Hamburg is or not.
Everyone else is a pullet, so we lucked out there!

I will say, that the Delaware rooster is rather friendly and curious so if anyone is looking for a well mannered Delaware roo, please let me know.
He comes over for attention, lets me pick him up and pet him as well.
Since we are not allowed to keep roosters...

This group is by far, the friendliest group of chicks we have ever had and this is out of 9 groups of chicks over the past 3 years.

Thanks to all who responded!!
