pretty sure that’s not normal. I think it’s poop and i tried to get as much off of the chicken as possible but I noticed that her butt was huge compared to the other chickens and was saggy and weird. it felt like how a full crop feels. she hasn’t been laying. does this have something to do with it?

I checked her for maggots. Didnt
Bring her in and check that rear end for maggots. It looks like flystrike to me.

I checked her for maggots but I didn’t see any. I read that article— thanks so much for the help— and it looks similar to me. We sprayed her with some antibacterial spray and we dried her off. I also trimmed some feathers and was able to get a better picture. Looks very similar to the pics in the article. Thanks!!

I would wash that daily or even give her a good soaking in an epsom salts bath daily. Apply Vetericyn or triple antibiotic ointment to the wound. The maggots may be gone, but it looks like maggot damage (maybe the other hens picked them off?)

With her not laying eggs, she could have a reproductive problem like Internal Laying, Egg Yolk Peritonitis, etc.

I have not seen any pecking- is it possible that the maggots went away some other way? I will do epsom salt soaks as well as poultry aid spray. thanks!!
