Thank you so much! It makes me feel better that I'm not the only one who is puzzled! I will hatch some eggs from him next year and see what we get! I would be very happy with a whiting true green.

I just corrected a typo in my long response there. Your rooster has a single comb, but I said "rose" at one point.

But McMurray doesn't sell Barnevelders, and the baby chick photo does not look like a Rhode Island Red or Barnevelder chick: there's a nice clear head stripe on this chick. (Baby chick photo is in post #6, on the first page of the thread.)

Not a Wyandotte, because the comb is wrong. Wyandottes have rose combs, yours has a single comb.

Where did you get him?

At first glance I thought he was a Rhode Island Red, but they are not supposed to have that much black patterning in their feathers. So I'm currently puzzled, too.

@NatJ - Actually, I have two Golden Laced Wyandotte's with single combs, not rose combs. They are still wyandotte's, but hatchery quality. Wyandotte's can have single combs.

But yes, I agree that the chicken we are talking about now is not a wyandotte based on the feather coloring and pattern.

Lol. I totally missed they don’t sell Barnevelders. I’m going Partridge Rock, then.

Whitings can also have a straight comb, but most are rose. But this ones body just doesn’t look like a whiting to me. However, there’s no real standard for them so.... anything’s possible.
