Hi! I have a chick that is a little over a week old. The woman we bought it from advertised it as a buff Orpington, but as it’s feathering out it’s not looking that way! After contacting the seller, she said it might be a barred rock or even a black sex link. She also has Ameraucanas, but it hatched out of a brown egg. Maybe it’s a cross breed? Let me know what you think.

Also, what do you think about the gender? I’m thinking it’s a cockerel. Its wings are growing significantly less than the others, and it doesn’t have tail feathers yet. Thanks!

Not Buff Orpington (feather colors are wrong), not Barred Rock or Black Sexlink (down color is wrong.)

A mix is most likely, but I can't tell you just what went into the mix.

At that age, there's no good way to tell. Either gender can get their feathers slower or faster. I once had a chick that looked nearly naked when the rest were fully feathered--and she grew up to be definitely a hen.
