Mystery chicks - suggestions please!

Ah. Well now. Scotland has just had its coldest freeze in about 25 years. Down to -11C some nights.
And it was particularly cold when I got my eggs. So maybe that's why they were light coloured then.

I'll post more pics in a couple of weeks to see what everyone thinks once they're a bit bigger...

CTChicken<om, this photo is not an australorp--they do not have feathered legs.

Ooops, sorry, I did a quick look at my pics from last summer and didn't check closely.

If the breeder said they were Marans, I would put my money on that, especially considering how he has the place set up. The barring would tell me Cuckoo, but over on your side of the pond, you have more varieties than we in the States do. Could be that you have Cuckoo and Black Marans there. Make sure you let us know how they grow.

Hi Minnie, I was just about to post some updated pics to see what everyone thought now. The breeder said 'maybe' they were Marans but he wasn't sure. Sounds awfully disorganised I know, but my boyfriend only went there to get me eight pullets, asked for some eggs as an afterthought (for me to try out my new bator). The breeder doesn't actually sell hatching eggs normally, and just said to my boyfriend to go and help himself to a dozen eggs off the floor of one of the sheds. So you see where the uncertainty arises...

Ah ha. I think you will find out for sure in a few weeks, so until then you can just keep on guessing.
