Mystery illness

It was clear Maggie wouldn't make it much longer and was in misery, so this morning we ended it for her and took her body to the lab. The lab called a few minutes ago. Diagnosis: yolk peritonitis. So nothing that could be done. Call me a bad chicken person, but I had never heard of that before. Happy to know that we're disease free and that there was essentially nothing that could have been done for her ultimately. Distressed though, bc the rest of the flock were her hatchery mates, so I have no doubt we'll loose the rest of the girls soon, and I'll NEVER EVER hatch any eggs our roo has had anything to do with, even though temprementally he's the best roo you can imagine.

Yes, hatchery. Bought the flock from a feed store and hand raised all the chicks. I'll never make that mistake again. Hatchery is just like a puppy mill for chickens. Wish I had realized that before. Sheesh. At least these gals have had super happy lives so far. Quality over quantity for the girls, just wish they could have both. Grrr.

Many thanks to everyone who helped out! Anytime I have a chicken question, BYC folks are my go-to source.
