Welcome to BYC! I absolutely love roosters. But, I've never had a mean one.
Chances are he is a good rooster. There are some things to keep in mind:
* the hens are his, not yours
*mating looks rough, but the hens are generally not harmed
* remember that you are the boss and keep that attitude. Expect respect.
*be prepared to get rid of him if he is aggressive to you, your family and pets,, or the hens
*when you find a good friendly rooster, hang on to him and treat him well
