N. California newbie

Welcome!

I have no problem keeping one rooster per flock but I won't keep a roo that is not people friendly. I don't want to worry about where the boys are when I'm collecting eggs or cleaning coops. I also would not want the aggressive trait pased down in the chicks if you hatch out his eggs.

All my boys dance for there ladies, feed them the best goodies, watch out for hawks, crows, etc while the girls forage.

Thank you all for the welcome! And Sumi and OR4-hmom, thank you for the input. I heard similar things from someone else about roosters, so it's nice to know that other people have had good experiences with them too. Hopefully the one I met just hadn't been raised to be nice. It quite literally attacked me and would also hurt and peck at his hens. But I really like the idea of them being protective of the flock! Last night, one of them was standing on the feeder whatching the others sleep like it was on guard. Made me think it will turn out to be a protective rooster! :)

I've taken my barred rock roo to a couple of 4-H events and it was funny watching the kids faces when I took him from the cage so they could see him up close. He is only a hatchery bird but bigger than most. The kids all thought he was going to be mean because of his size and to see me reach in and stand him on my leg so they could pet him was pretty cute.

They also get a kick holding the little OEGB's. They are small enough that even 3 & 4 year olds can comfortably hold them, I refer to them as my bomb-proof birds. They take everything in stride. My daughter went to state fair this year and her little showbird was sunbathing in our hands and fell asleep, she brought a smile to many chicken lovers face. The poor bird was going through a terrible molt but she looked so cute sleeping stretched out on my palms.

Hi! I just saw your name on Should I buy eggs or wait it out? and saw that you were from N CA, so thought I'd say howdy! Please feel free to post on the thread. There are a few of us regulars and we chat about our chickens and ourselves and sometimes frequently share a bit of silliness. You're welcome to join in.

Sorry about what happened to your chickens. It is amazing how personable they can be when you get to know them and so sad when something gets them. There is a really active thread California - Northern where you can meet lots of folks close to you (near Sacramento?). Everyone is really friendly and helpful, but the thread moves fast. I try to keep up with reading, but don't often post there. It's a very good resource for finding breeders of unusual breeds. OR4-hmom posts there also, even though she lives in Oregon! Northern CA is big!
