Hi, I'm Kimmy. My husband and I have two daughters. We are brand new to chickens and I have joined this website in hopes of learning as much as possible about coops and chicken care before making our purchases.

Welcome to BYC! The Learning Center is a great place to start! :) https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center my recommendations are to use 1/4 inch hardware cloth (very strong mesh wire) instead of chicken wire on your coop/run as chicken wire doesn't keep predators out. And speaking from experience, if you have dogs please keep them separate, even if dogs don't display any interest in the chickens. Also, I would join your state's thread to talk with local chicken people and perhaps find the breeds of chickens you want locally. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/160883/louisiana-la-yers-peeps best of luck to you!

Welcome to BYC!

Liz has set you on a good path to the learning center. Lots of good articles on getting started and raising your flock proper. You might also stop by our Coops pages to give you some ideas. Lots of these coops are very easy to follow and some even have plans...

You can even ask questions in our Coop Construction Forums for more help should you run into any issues during your build...

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!
